Brian Mohika inventor of medical underwear

The Eagle-Tribune is a seven-day morning daily newspaper covering the Merrimack Valley and Essex County, Massachusetts, and southern New Hampshire.

Brian Mohika, an Air Force veteran and registered nurse, had an inspiration.

While taking care of patients recovering from operations on their kidneys or livers, he noticed that the bags they had to wear to collect fluid from those organs would slide up and down their legs, causing discomfort.

It occurred to him that if the bag were contained in a pocket, that would eliminate the sliding, discomfort and rashes. So Mohika invented a type of medical underwear that’s equipped with a pocket designed to hold a fluid bag.

Mohika obtained a patent for his invention and established a company called CathWear. He now plans to manufacture this new brand of medical underwear.

“This will provide jobs for Lawrence people,” he said during a recent interview. Mohika is not quite ready to mass-produce his product, he said.

He needs to establish a market for the apparel and secure financing. His longtime friend, Edwin Alvarez, is his business partner and chief financial officer for CathWear.

NECC Alumnus and Students Collaborate with CathWear

Northern Essex Community College (NECC) is a public community college in Essex County, Massachusetts. The college serves residents of the Merrimack Valley and Southern New Hampshire. It has campuses in Haverhill and Lawrence.

Mohika, a 2006 graduate of NECC’s Radiologic Technology program, who went on to earn a bachelor’s in nursing from UMass Lowell, is the inventor of CathWear, the custom, unisex underwear that resembles boxer briefs with pockets on each thigh to hold catheter bags as well as a catheter channel tract to hold the accompanying medical tubes that will prevent inadvertent pulling. The briefs are washable, reusable, and available in a variety of sizes.

“CathWear restores dignity and privacy during treatment and recovery while improving the quality of life of the patients, who because of various medical conditions and surgical procedures, have to wear leg bags daily to work or school,” said the Bradford resident, who currently works for Home Health VNA. “It removes the unsanitary, Velcro straps that slide down your leg when they become loose or cuts off circulation when they are too tight. It helps avoid embarrassing moments as well as skin irritations and reduces infection.”
